The AV1 Image File Format (AVIF) is a cutting-edge image standard based on the AV1 video codec. It was developed by the Alliance for Open Media (AOMedia) as an open, royalty-free standard to significantly reduce file sizes while preserving image detail.

Why is AVIF so popular?

AVIF compression outperforms older standards by a wide margin. Compared to JPEG, an AVIF file is typically 50% to 70% smaller for equivalent visual quality. Even compared to WebP (which was itself a major upgrade over JPEG), AVIF offers another 30% reduction in size.
